Posted - 06/14/2009 : 07:48:46 AM Brett, I measured the overhang (actualy this is where you can sit) from the transom to the sides is 19 inches from the transom to the middle is 23 inches I could not see it in the pics you sent of after first removal. If I do need to cut it would be about 6 inches past the first hinge heading aft on the port and starboad sides there is a removable (not sure in origanal) beam that holds the engine hatches down the center line. If it has to be cut other than making sure it is sealed up can you see any problem structuraly (the thing sits in that grove and rides on wood) if I use stainless piano hinge on top of the cut I would only need to unbolt the center beam and fold it back then pushing the whole thing forward I would have lots of room to lift it out. I think the benifits of easy removal are starting to make my saw hand itchy....Brian T .......Stop me if you guys think all wet!!!!!! .............................................. |

Posted - 06/14/2009 : 07:09:46 AM Brett, how high did you have to lift it on the cabin end? Can you shoot me a couple pics of both ends so I can see whats differant does your transom end have a fairly wide overhang above the deck?

Posted - 06/14/2009 : 01:10:33 AM I am not sure why it will not fit out on your boat. When we removed my deck this year the helm was still in, and both footrests. My boat, however does not have the storage compartment under the companion seat. Is that getting in the way?
It is a tight fit getting the deck out but it shouldn't have to be cut. If you do cut it, you expose the balsa core of the deck which could allow it to rot. There must be some other removable part blocking your deck removal?

Posted - 06/13/2009 : 4:24:03 PM Brett, there is no way the deck is going to come out I can only lift the cabin side up about a foot before hitting the stuff (woodwork) around the helm need about 2 more inches at transom end to clear the way out. I am thinking about finding a nice spot about a foot or so back from the cabin side and cutting across. This would make it a whole lot easyer to get out and I could use a nice peice of stainless plate and some stainless bolts and nuts on the bottom side to reattach. Any thoughts wecome I first thought about putting hinges across the cut..... Whatever I do it has to come out and go in easly. If anyone thinks of a better idea let me know I am going to sleep on this for a couple days (hate to cut anything but have done much worse on other fiberglass boats just to get a tank out)

Posted - 06/10/2009 : 11:39:58 PM When mine was removed one person (the stronger one) stood in the engine hatch hole. The second person (me) stood on the swim platform and leaned over the transom and grabbed the edge of the deck. It does take a bit of finesse to get the deck to fit out of the boat, the tapered sides of the boat are narrower than the deck.
I forgot to mention that the taffrail was completely removed from the boat. I have never attempted removing the deck with the rail installed. Once the deck is squeezed out of the boat a bit, it can be set down on the transom. It will balance there with the area of the deck that is usually above the fuel tank sitting on the transom of the boat.
A third person certainly helps, especially when handing the deck down from the boat onto the ground.
Once you get the thing removed, you will likely find that the mahogany strip that surrounds the engine compartment is rotted. This is the wood strip that the deck screws on to. I replaced the rotted wood strip with treated lumber. There are about 100 small bronze screws that fasten it to the fiberglass.

Posted - 06/10/2009 : 7:55:39 PM Well I tried to get the deck cover out today with 2 people I ran a rope under the cover and we each lifted from both sides when it comes up there isnt enough clearance at the transom end guess we need a third to lift the engine end up to gain more room... will try again tomorrow any thoughts???

Posted - 06/10/2009 : 1:14:13 PM Brian,
I currently have my deck cover removed from my Monterey. It is the second time I have had it off.
There are 8 screws that hold the deck down. Mine also had 2 wood supports just aft of the engine hatches that were held in with bronze lag screws. I am not sure if these were original.
Anyway, it is much easier to lift the cover off if the hatches are removed first. You will need to drill out the pop rivets to do so. If your rivets are intact I would suggest drilling only the ones that attach to the deck, not the ones attached to the hatches. The deck rivets can be replaced with machine screws without interfering with the proper closing of the hatches.
Two people can lift the cover off, one standing on the swim platform and another standing in between the engines.
Check out these pics to see what I found under my engine cover the first time I took it off: http://picasaweb.google.com/barb.brett.kimball/TheWorkBegins?feat=directlink
