OK, so I'm laid up, Jimbo Song is out cruising in Florida, and I'm guessing most others are putting their boats away for the winter.

But come on guys, I need stuff to read!

What kind of winter projects are you guys looking at?
Anyone have repairs to do?

I'm not totally sure how they do it nor do I have the final cost yet but I will certainly let everyone know as soon as I have it.

I don't remember, but they either use a chain between the input and output, thus giving the shafts the same direction, or they add an idle gear between the two, again making both shafts turn the same.
You do this to only one drive, and that gives you your counter rotation on the props with both engines Turing the same direction.

The standard v drive has the output turning opposite the input.

Any additional details you have on that (cost for Walter to convert, installation issues etc..) are appreciated.

This is potentially valuable info for anyone considering replacing an original RH rotation V8 with a crate LH rotation.

Having the boat hauled and doing the work on the hard. Actually, the majority of the work is being done by a pro. This one is pretty complicated and I am just simply not up to the task.

Yes, V drives, shafts and props will be used. Transmissions will be replaced by Yanmar gears. The engines I'm using are less HP but LOTS more torque. Engineer says I can expect a cruise of 17 kts at about 2.5 mpg. Running at hull speed (trawler style) I can expect 3.5 to 4 mpg.

I'm also having a diesel gen installed at the same time (much easier and cheaper this way)

Yup, I will take lots of photos along the way. You are, however, welcome to come drink beer any time.

You planning on doing the repower in the water (in your back yard) or are you pulling it out?
I'm guessing your V drives can take the added HP and or torque?
New Transmissions needed?


Sounds like a lot of work. (I do work for beer, by the way :-)

We do need a LOT of photos........

Already arranged to send one of my "V" drives to Walter to have it reversed. Yanmar doesn't make counter-rotating engines so it has to be done at the "V" drive.

Yes, V's, prop shafts and props will remain.

Actually, there are a number of Marinas that offer only diesel but, with a little planning, neither is hard to come by.

I use a service called marinalife dot com to make all of my Marina reservations and plan my gas stops. They have a lot of information about Marinas; fecilities, reviews, location, fuel prices, etc. Rates range from $1.75 per vessel length foot to $2.00 per foot depending on location and facilities.

There is another site called marinefuel dot com that you can use to shop around for the best fuel prices.

As for my old motors, the folks doing the major lifting part of the job for me are wanting to buy them but we have yet to come up with a price I am willing to take. Actually, I thought about you and a couple of others on here that may need some parts so I'll let you know where it ends up.

Hey Bob,

On your last "cruise", did you have any problem finding gas?
Is diesel fuel harder to find, or the other way around?

Also,

Did you need to call ahead to get a slip?
Some of your overnight stops looked really nice. They would need to kick me out if it was me!
What kind of slip fee's did you see on that trip?

So, your repower will happen in the next 2 months?
What is your plan for your old Crusaders? I could use some
parts as you well know.

Repower. Going to replace my tired old small block GM's with two Yanmar 4JH4-HTE's plus adding a Westerbeke diesel generator.

I know, I know, some are going to say; "Is he crazy? Putting that much money into that boat?" Well, I've done the math. Using all of my old fuel logs from past cruises and comparing the averages to performance numbers from both Yanmar and the engineering company I am using and also taking into consideration cheaper costs for marine diesel as opposed to marine gasoline, I am looking at a total paypack in 6 years. That's right, what I save in 6 years will pay back my investment.

Now, also include savings for being better equipped to anchor out as opposed to Marina Hopping and the payback time gets shorter.

That's what I'm going to do during this brutal Florida winter. Oh yeah, it should be done in time to make a Christmas cruise to the Bahamas.
