What type of packing are you guys using in your prop shaft stuffing boxes?
What's the good, bad, and ugly of your set up?

I'm going dripless for two basic reasons: 1) Adjusting the stuffing boxes is a royal PITA! 2) I HATE water in my bilge and with drip seals there is no way that I know of to keep the bilge dry. Nothing good ever came from having water in the bilge, much less salt water.

I would definately go dripless. My stuffing boxes have an adjusting nut that is locked with cotter pins so I don't have to get two wrenches down there, but I have to adjust my packing all the time still a pain in the neck with v-drives.

Definately go dripless. Since you dont have your engines in yet it will be a lot easier. Fortunatly I already had one side done by the po because it cost me 850.00 to have the other side done.It's a real pain to do with the engine in the way and having to remove the shaft.

I've never used it so have to experience with it. But, I've talked to a lot of guys around here and the consensus is "don't screw around, pay the bucks and go dripless". So, it's peanuts when considered as a factor of the total cost of this repower project anyway, I'm going with that.

I am feeling much better.
I have actually been going some work on the engines.
Have the carbs done, both raw water pumps are done, one alternator, and a bunch of small parts cleaned and painted.
My son and I will be replacing a ring gear this week, if I finally get it.
Bob, what do you think of the clay type packings that gets installed between the standard stuff? any good?

Right now I have regular teflon drip stuffing box seals. But, I hate it. I do NOT like water of any amount in the bilge and it drives me crazy and I'm really tired of having to adjust the da*n things..
So, when I repower I'm going with dripless. (www.pacificmarine.net)
