Posted - 09/22/2005 : 5:41:26 PM Hello, I'm new to the carver forum but have rapidly become an avid reader..Having just recently purchased a 1977 carver mariner I find myself with numerous questions and have been communicating with Frank on several concerns (great resource person)..At this time I'm trying to fnd out the best props for the boat.. twin 302's. Another problem we have encountered is the wiring system which appears to need replacing and we don't have any diagram to help us completer this task this winter... PS winter is rapidly approaching us in the interior of Alaska and we want to put the Boat back in the water this Spring in Prince William Sound..Valdez Alaska..this is where the exxon Valdez had the massive oil spill ten years ago.. Thanks in advance for any advice you might have Doug H, Tok, Alaska |

Posted - 09/23/2005 : 11:17:00 AM Mine had 16Dx16P props. You can go a little bigger, say 17D, but anything more and you just run out of room. The props need some clearance to avoid tip turbulence drumming the hull. I wish there was enough clearance to put a set of those Dyna Quads on but the smallest is 18D. The thing about props is that they're kind of a black art. Nobody can look at a boat and say it need prop so and so. The only way to know which is best is to actually test them in the water...a posiibility that is beyond the everyday owner. I'm keeping the old 16x16s, but have also picked up a set of 17x15. I'll give 'em a try with the new fuel injected 302s when its back in the drink. May need to go a little pitchier like 17x19. 17x15 will give good low end push and the extra diameter will help with getting the 302's hp to the water. Since the pitch is a little short, the upper end will suffer a bit, but it should plane out and run well at 3000 rpm. |

Posted - 09/22/2005 : 8:07:52 PM HI DOUG, IF THE PROPS ARE ORIGINAL THEY ARE PROBABLY THE BEST SUITED FOR YOUR BOAT,THE 1977 MARINER WAS ACTUALLY A LIGHT BOAT FOR ITS SIZE ABOUT 7500 POUNDS IF I REMEMBER RIGHT. WHAT ARE YOUR TOP RPM'S? DOES THE BOAT GET ON PLANE WITH A FULL LOAD I.E.FULL TANKS, 6 AVERAGE SIZE PEOPLE, FISHING GEAR, FOOD, CLOTHING, FULL WATER TANKS? WHAT IS YOUR TOP SPEED? BOATS RUN BETTER IN COLD WATER THAN WARM? WHAT IS YOUR OIL PRESSURE AT IDLE AND AT TOP END WHAT IS YOUR WATER TEMP IN THE ENGINES? THESE ARE ALL QUESTIONS NEEDED FOR A PROPER PROP EVALUATION. I HAVE A FORM FROM A PLACE CALLED AIR MARINE, THEY ARE PROP BUILDERS IF YOU WOULD LIKE ME TO SEND IT TO YOU I WILL EMAIL IT. |
