What material is used for covering the wood on the fly bridge and decking and how do you install it... just tore all mine off today and want to replace it..Was thinking of using marine vinyl that is used in the seats.

HI ROB,YOU CAN USE MARINE VINYL ON VERTICAL SURFACES BUT I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND IT ON FLAT AREAS, IT TEARS TO EASILY. I TRIED IT ON MY 72 CARVER, HAD TO REDO IT THE NEXT YEAR. TRY NAUTILEX IT IS MADE FOR DECKS AND OUT SIDE WET AREAS.THE MOST IMPORTANT THING TO DO IS START WITH A PERFECT SURFACE ANY IN PERFECTIONS WILL TELEGRAPH TH RU. DO IT WHEN IT IS WARM NOT HOT THE STUFF WILL SHRINK. USE MANUFACTURERS GLUE AND INSTRUCTIONS. I THINK BOAT US SELLS IT BUT I ALSO THINK YOU CAN SHOP THE NET FOR A BETTER DEAL.

I was thinking of doing a teak deck... but someone (dad)wants to keep my boat original.. i still have everything including the interior all original. So you think the marine vinyl will work on the side and front of the bridge?i herd to use fiberglass glue then lay it into it.What did you use?

Rob, I did the same thing this past year. The material used on the side panels of the flybridge, on new plywood was Gulf Fabrics, Allegro (color) ALL-7061. It is available from Outdoor Textiles in Stuart FL. The contact there is Paul Gioia, email paul@outdoortextiles.com. Phone number 1-800-765-7011. The color and texture of the vinyl is identical to the original. It installs the same as Nautolex. I used the Natural color Nautolex for the decks. Use the Nautolex adhesive for both.

If you need more info, contact me at wmmiller@aol.com

Rob, was just rereading some of the postings and came across this one. How did you do with the Nautolex. I am just getting mine out for the summer, was under cover on my dock. Nautolex and the Gulf Fabrics look like new. Very happy the way the job turned out.

I used marine fabric and not pleased with it. I put the boat inside storage this summer and going to do a complete face lift on it. Going to order the proper stuff. DO NOT CUT CONER AND TRY TO SAVE $$$ It will cost you more in the end.

Rob, sorry to hear about your displeasure with the fabric. Was that the same product I suggested. The reason I asked is that mine is now in the second season and still looks like new, other than for the occassional spider track.

The fabric looks great, just a little soft and it scraches easy. Was difficult to apply too because it stretches too.

Rob, did you use the same material that I did. I am surprised to hear you felt it stretched too much. When I did my side panels I applied the fabric just as I did the Nautolex on the deck. There was no stretching of the fabic at all, just layon as you would wall paper. I then rolled the surface to assure all air bubbles were removed and let dry. I did this inside and did both sides at the same time. This was done a year or so ago. Just finished pressure washing the surfaces and they look like new. Would be interested in hearing what fabric you used.

If it were me, depending on the size of the area needing repair, I would use the pebbled fiberglass panel sold by H-D and Lowes. It comes in 48" by 96" by about 1/8" thick sheets, costs about $29.00 per sheet and can be glued to almost any surface. If the area is bigger than that, multiple sheets can be used, joined and sealed by using the plastic trim also sold there.

It, having a pebbled surface, is as good a non-skid as is found on decking and would be a lot more durable than any vinyl fabric.

I've used it to cover the exterior wood bulkhead on my boat and it needs no maintenance other than occasional washing and waxing.

Carry on, regardless.

Good luck with the install. I found it relatively easy to work with and it will conform to gentle curves (as long as they are not compound). If necessary, it can be heated to conform but if too extreme, the glass fibers will crack, leaving those nasty little "hairs" that will penetrate skin and itch like nothing else. Sanding them doesn't help a lot either.

Let me know how it works for you.

Carry on, regardless.

Years ago I put Nautolex Natural over my decks in a boat that was used in salt water. In 2 years it was all faded. A contributing factor might have been jet fuel - we were right in the landing pattern of LaGuardia Airport, and you'd be surprised how black it turns everything! I don't know if this fadind is still a problem in fresh water boats...

Unless you're a real aficianado, consider putting 2 or 3 layers of fiberglass soaked in epoxy (not polyester resin), with a nonskid brushed on top. It'll look great and be real durable. You might have to paint every 5 years...
