Just finished replacing all the dry rot boards on the deck and going to lay 6 oz glass down on the bare wood to seal it, just wanting to know should i put down the vinyl like the original or go all glass and paint.. so far my boat only had two owners and is all ordinal including the interior, its in real good shape I was thinking of using natulus covering, sandstone or the natural. What's everyone opinion? Rob

| I think that to keep the boat totally original is fine to a point but anything that improves the boat or helps the preservation is fine also. There are no rules or prizes for the most original boat but it does generally have an effect on the value should you ever want to sell it. I intend glassing my deck but keeping the boat generally original with the original interior layout etc. No two boats are ever the same from the factory so I think its a matter of personal choice. |

| Selling it WHAT!!! LOL To much joy into her for that. and what can you buy now days that has the warmths of a partly wood boat without breaking the bank. And usually a old boat will turn head faster than a new one.. I get more looks from my 70 vw than that vette driving down the road and more thumbs up too.. And also hear people commenting on my boat when they go by. |

i personally would stay as original as possible not as much for resale values but more for the aw sum feeling you get in your heart when someone says look at that old boat, don't she look great. most of us would rather give up anything else except a great wife and a good dog than give up our old carvers. frank |

Rob, there's been a lot of development of materials since the Mariner's time. Epoxy resins, linear polyurethane paints and nonskid decking has recently made it possible to have better than original exterior finishing for do-it-yourselfers. The deck should be covered with epoxy/fiberglass, sanded and primed with 2 part primer. The primer gets sanded and topcoated with 2 part polyurethane; the roller and tip method is excellent for flat surfaces. When cured the deck can be painted with nonskid or you can use the Nautolex (eew), Treadmaster ($) or my favorite, Seadek. www.seadek.com Epifanes, Interlux, and System3 all make paint products that would be fine choices for your project. |

I know the nautolex is not likely the best way of going but i still like to keep it as original as i can, tmetes said it right.. And by covering it with fiberglass under the nautolex i think it will better than it was before.. But please keep the advice coming. Thanks |

| the soft on the flat areas did not last in the vertical sides it was better but you could tell it was not going to last as long as the nautelex |
