In the past I have owned a 28' Carver Mariner (1976) and loved it, but I recently sold her to buy an 81 Carver Santa Cruz 28'. They are somewhat similar except that the Santa Cruz has a smaller cabin but larger cockpit area.
My diver recently brought to my attention that the prop was badly deteriorated along with the shaft. The outer tips of the prop were eaten away because the previous owner didn't keep up with the zincs.
Does anyone know what size prop this one takes and what the pitch is? It has a Mercruiser with a Walter V-drive.
Thanks
Bill

I don't know about that specific one, but mine took 16x15s (16 diameter and 15 pitch).
The hub should have it stamped on it, might try lightly sanding the hub, sometimes the numbers will show up then. They should be something like 15x15.

| Hey Luna Sea, I just recently purchased a 1980 28' carver santa cruz and i love the boat aswell, But have a question, do you notice a slight port list to the boat? I was thinking it was because the waste holding tank is on that side, I have two 350 crusader engines and two 80 gallon aluminum tanks on both sides, along with a 50 gal fresh water tank at the stern, Also i was wondering if your model is a 2566.. do you know if the hull is built with a balsa core or straight frberglass since its a 1980, i know from looking through this site they say that earlier boats were made with a balsa core hull and wondering if that can be a cause of the port list that i carry due to moisture? i hope im just worrying to much about it |

Heyas fellow Santa Cruzer,
It is the same model, but mine does not list but then again my power configuration is very different from yours with only one engine dead center and two gas tanks on each side. I believe that this model year still used balsa cores along with plywood and spruce stringers. I think your issue might be with your tanks.
Thanks rockmeister for the prop info.
You wouldn't by any chance have any info on your prop size and pitch?
Thanks
Bill

Hey Maritime,
I have noticed the same port list on mine and have wondered the same thing. Possibly water in a core. Will check it out when I pull the boat for the winter and take remedial action then, if it is an issue.
Will let you know what I find.

thanks Rockmeister, I was moving some tools and other supplies inside the cabin the other day and took her out for a spin and found that the shift of weight did help some.... sounds too simple though huh, What exactly can you do to fix water in the core, and when you say "core" that is the structure of the hull right? hahaha |

Yes,
I am talking about the wood core below the water line. Thinking a combination of heat, and vacuum to dry it out and then suck the resin in with the vacuum. That is, if it is an issue at all.

Mine is a 1978 Santa Cruz and the hull surveyor assured me that the boat had a solid fibreglass hull. If he was incorrect I would sure like to know. Is there any practical way to find out for sure?

Know on the Mariners they used cores until the 80's (Early 80's I believe, someone here should know for sure.) Suspect the Santa Cruz's were built pretty much the same.
I can see the cores in the side of mine. You can see light through the fiberglass where there is only fiberglass with no core.
In my bilge, looking closely, you can see the bulge where some of the wood core is, and the depressions where the core isn't.
Would like to get access to an infared camera to see exactly where the cores are myself. An infared light outside and taking pictures inside should tell us.

As I understand it the Mariner 2896 and the Santa Cruz 2866 share the same hull and I think you are right Rock, this hull should be a balsa core until early 80's.
