What temperature does your carver Mariner twin V drive run at when cruising ? My twin 351 with V drives runs at around 140 DEG at around 1800 RPM and about 160 - 165 at 2200 RPM. Does anyone know what the normal temperature is and how hot is too hot for these engines?. Is 180 range too hot?
Question would be - are you running with thermostats or not? Without them, you will run cooler, generally speaking, probably in the 120/140 range. Frequently thermostats used are set to open at 165 (and here in the great white north we even use 185degF). Cold operation can be just as hard/wearing on the engine/transmission as hot imo. From my knowledge, your readings sound ok. If you are not on plane at 2200rpm, you would find better fuel economy and control at 2800 on plane, and the engines would not be working as hard.
I agree with what has been stated so far. My 302s run between 140 and 150 with new impellers. For a Chevy, 180 isnt too hot, but the Fords tend to like cooler temps.

Thanks guys I thought that was the case but needed to be reassured. To my knowledge they both have 142 thermostats so it sounds OK where they are. Thanks again. regards Paul
