Well, i am brand new here, let me introduce myself, My name is Matt Marwood and i live On Vancouver Island on the West Coast of Canada. I am only 16, but have been around boats a lot of my life. For the past 2 years i have been working at a marina and have gained a lot of knowledge about boats and there problems. Me and my friend have recently found a 1974 Carver 28' sedan for a very good price with a trailer, and plan to go have a look and turn it into our project for the winter.(We are very handy and have lots of experiance with tools and structures)
My question, does anybody know what these are worth in running shape with twin 305's?
Also what are the key things to look for in this boat other then the usual(transom, stringers, hull damage, etc)? Are there any common problem spots in these boats that should be checked before purchase?
Also any other tips or advice would help alot, we are hoping to bring the boat home mid October assuming inspection goes well.
Thankyou, Matt

Other than the usual, like engine compression etc. Definitely check the cores in the hull below the waterline, a plastic headed hammer is good for this. If the core is rotted, it will sound hollow and takes major work to repair.
I probably wouldn't go much more than a thousand or so for the boat, if it is in pretty good shape.
Hope this helps!

Hi Matt Welcome aboard. its great to see the younger people getting into boat restoring. I have one question. You say this is a 74 28 foot carver, are you sure? Do you have any other photos as it appears to be different to any 74 - 75 era Carver 28. Maybe it has been modified or something but the hull lines and the cabin are very different to any Carver I know of. If the seller says it is a Carver, I would get it checked out first and ask for documents to show this, also get the hull number off the lower port side of the transom. The last two digits tell you the year of manufacture. Hope this helps and good luck. Regards Paul
