well i'm thinking of doing something to my 1976 carver 2896 boat.i would like to know if anyone would know of why ,i could not do this.
up on top of this boat where the railing is from the driving area around ,i would like to take it down, and place up a 2ft white firoglass wall all the way to the ladder,and build a L shape seating area . ,will this boat hold that up there? almost like in one of the newer carvers?

| It will probably hold the 'improved' flybridge, however I do not know about any additional weight of passengers if you add more people capability up there... ... consider also that it is not just the carrying capacity of say six or eight on the fly, but also that the boat can become top-heavy and in a situation where there is a beam wave and the boat rolls, it could potentially capsize imo... |

| /well i would never at one time have more then four people up there ,i just was wanting to know if it would hold the wait? so thank you,i guess just for the newer look .and i could add 2x3 in a closet in the cabin for better holding of it all if you think i should i mean this fly brigde could realy have alot of room to it the railing takes away from all that |

I have seen this done on a Carver 28' Mariner on our lake. To handle the potential weight the owner installed two stiff legs on the rear of the added platform and suppported the weight on the cockpit. Worked fine.

| thank you very much . i'm working on this now . i am just hoping to open up the room that is already there.. up top cause the railing on a 76 carver 2896 takes up almost 2 ft, of room up top . |

Personally, this doesn't sound like such a good idea for one reason, wind. Carver 28's, both Mariner and Voyager are fairly shallow draft boats. That is, not much below the water line. So, they tend to be a little "rolly" anyway. Adding weight to the fly bridge adds to that tendency. Now, also because of the shallow draft adding any high surface for the wind to push on will make the boat more difficult to habdle in any cross wind. These boats already have a lot of free board at the bow and adding flat surface that high up will make it much worse in the wind, particularly a cross wind.
Case in point, my 28 Voyager has an eisenglas enclosure around the bridge. If I go off shore or go out on a windy day I dare not do so unless I roll up the sides so the wind can't push on them. Not to mention trying to dock in a cross wind. Any flat surface that high up is going to act like the sail on a sailboat.
