Hello again. More questions on my 1982 Carver Mariner 2896. In the book that came with the boat, carver says that Solid teak wood is used extensively on carver Boats, especially on there exterior.
I am in the process of installing a new bulk head. I have found, after a long search, a sheet of marine grade plywood, teak G2s. What I need to know is what kind of wood was used around the plywood on the bulk head? I have removed all the trim and the door from the bulk head but it does not look like teak to me. Looks more like Mahogany but I need to know for sure. Also need to know if the wood rail is teak. If it is teak I will oil it. If not I need to refinish it. Also, what kind of varnish or polyurethane should I use to best protect the wood from the elements. Thanks,,,,,, Mark

Hi Mark Carver were very consistent in using Teak for the majority of the wood trim. All exterior was Burmese Teak and was originally oiled. Mahogany was used inside for all solid wood applications. All the paneling and bulkheads inside and out was Teak ''Decolam'' laminated plywood. Carver recommended in the owners hand book only satin finish for the inside and use rub on cleaner or oil.
Do you have the owmers manual? It is all explained in detail in there on the care and maintenance of the woodwork and the glass finish. A full owners manual is included in my DVD which gives full specs and details. Hope this helps
regards Paul

Thanks Paul I found the owner manual under the broken water heater shelf.Has all the info as you said.Still looking for some photos of the trim tab blocks. I removed the bulkhead today, what a job and a mess. Will start cutting the teak marine plywood in the morning to replace the roted bulkhead, measure three times, cut once. Don't want to screw it up at $175.00 a sheet. Thanks for the reply. I am sure I will have more questions soon.Does your DVD have the pics I need of the trim tab blocks?Does it include photos of the 2896 Mariner?
Thanks again. Mark |

For refinishing my teak flooring, teak trim and outside wood I used Minwax fast drying polyurethane in a satin finish and I am thrilled with the results. The wood looks gorgeous and is holding up very well to heavy use.
