Our Mariner is almost ready for launch. When we bought the boat last year, I noticed that the port packing nut had a steady drip, about every five seconds. The PO told me this was normal. This being my first inboard boat I believed him, he was wrong. I need to know if anyone can tell me what size these nuts are? or where I can buy the wrench to tighten the packing nuts and lock nuts?
Off hand I am not sure of the size of the nuts since I use a couple of old adjustable wrenches that came with my boat. I have seen adjustable packing nut wrenches at West Marine for about $20. They may not be the most robust wrenches, but they are open on the end instead of at a 90 degree angle which may help for hard to reach nuts.
I have had plenty of bad advice offered by people regarding the proper drip rate of the drive shafts. 12 drops per minute is high, especially if the shaft is not rotating. I have been following the advice of Don Casey when adjusting my stuffing boxes: http://www.boatus.com/boattech/Casey/StuffingBox.htm

Hello again.

I had mine replaced with dripless packings. Now I don't even have to think about it. The starboard side had no packing left in it at all. It was running steadidly into the bildge so bad that the pump would go on every half hour or so. Pretty scary.
