OK, here's a new one for you. The insurance for my 1987 Voyager 28 is up for renewal next monet. As is normal for me, for the past few days I've been calling other carriers and getting rates to make sure what I've got is competitive.
However, this time a couple of carriers, most notable GEICO (actually their subsidiary or whomever it is that handles their marine insurance) tells me they no longer insure Carvers. I never could get a reason only that they "are not competitive". Whatever that means.
A couple of other tell me they will issue Liability Only, no hull coverage.
Have any of you run accross this in the past? It just seems pretty weird to me.

I have not yet run across this but I have run across insurance companies that require you to use one of their "approved" surveyors (e.g. BoatUS).
It seems that if the boat has a good survey (from a trusted surveyor) that the company should issue coverage based on the value determined by the surveyor.

I don't mind the surveyer bit, but, these guys are telling me they don't/can't insure Carvers, specifically Carvers. My Key West CC fishing boat, no problem.
Go figure.

| It appears as though their actuaries have some calulations that suggest that they are not a good risk. This may not be due necessarily with the construction of the boats, but perhaps their owners are making a disproportionate number of claims. |

When they told me, I was shocked. I tehn asked her; "Well, what about Bayliners". Her reply was; "Oh, we insure a lot of those."
I laughed and hung up. I've owned a 32' Bayliner and I can tell you my 28 Carver is 10 times the boat that BL ever thought of being.
I don't get it.

Boat US will insure you. I just got my '88 insured and they were pretty easy to deal with. I did have it surveyed by one of their approved guys when I bought the boat. There were several issues in the "A" list that they wanted to be fixed but they didn't expect everything to be done right away. They gave me the ins. with the agreement that at the next haul out the remainder of the items would be taken care of. Hugh |

Yep, same here. I finally went through the "Survey" routine and got insurance through BoatUS. (Same company my towing service is with)
I just found it humerous that they would insure a Bayliner and not a Carver. their actuaries obviously know dick about boats. :)
Thanks, Bob

| No kidding. I guess that means they won't insure new Carvers either. Pretty stupid of them to lose all that business because of some dummys opinion of Carvers. |
