Thanks for all of the earlier posts as I purchased my 87 Mariner this spring. The boat has been everything I had hoped for with my family spending the last week on the boat touring around the islands in Lake Erie.

I have noticed that the tachometers on the boat seem rather inconsistent. The often read in the 45-60,000 range when we are cruising probably around 25-30,000 range. Then other times they read what I perceve to be accurate. Does anyone have any experience with this. Should I be looking at wiring or do the gauges wear out and need to be replaced. Any help is appreciated.

It is possible you have a bad connection, however it is common for the Tachs to eventually fail.
Normal cruise is in the 3,000 RPM range, with a max of 4,500 RPM or so.

Hope this helps!

I got a little carried away with the zeros. I am getting readings or 4500-6000. Thanks for the reply

My 1988 era tachometers wander and show incorrect (too high) rpm readings often.

I finally got sick of it this year and started investigating the problem.

The fix is simple as long as you can gain access to the back of your tachometer.

You will find that the tachometer has a setting switch on the back of it for 4, 6, 8 cylinder engines.

Turn that knob back and forth a few times to clean up the connection inside. Then make sure you leave it on the correct 8 cylinder setting.

Your tachs won't wander anymore.
