The JustUs3 has twin Ford 302s (vintage 1978) which have recently been rebuilt. Considering the age of the engines, I'm wondering if I should be adding a lead substitute to the fuel? Any thoughts?
I would think that all engines of that vintage being rebuilt since the early 1990's would have hardended valves/seats and other parts suitable for running on unleaded... those are my thoughts ;-)
All engine shops that I know of now automaticallyt install hardened exhaust valves and seats. The lead was used to soften the landing of the exhaust valve. I wouldn't worry about using an additive at all, I WOULD worry about using the correct oil! See the link :Something to think about for our older engines".
