Greetings all,
I am in the process of repowering ... and I plan to give you all a blow by blow once it is done. Since the engines are out, I thought it prudent to take a very close look at the fuel tanks. But, I cannot figure out how to remove them. My '85 Mariner has a piece of angle iron (actually aluminium) across the top of the tanks, one at each end. There are treaded bars (5/16" rods) that goes down to the base and through what looks like a board that the tanks sit on. I cannot get the bars out of the way ... so I cannot get the tanks out. I have to believe that one of you have had a leaky tank at one time or another?? And would appreciate any advice on getting the tanks out of the boat. Also, any opinions on weather I should replace them or just inspect them would be much appreciated.
Thanks a bunch, Regards, Jerry

Hey Jerry!
I haven't taken the tanks out, so I can't really help there. I know yottyboy had, maybe he can help. I do suspect there is a nut and washer under the board on the threaded rods. Can you get to them?
If you do a write-up as you do the work, you will remember alot more and it is more interesting to read. Started doing a blow by blow on mine and it was alot easier. Besides, we may be able to help with your trials and tribulations!
Am pulling my engines this fall after I pull my boat also. Need to re-build or replace the 302s. Thinking 351s.
What are you re-powering from/to?

Thanks for the advice,
Unfortunatly, there is no nut and washer under the tanks. Basically the rod is just bent 90 degrees right under the tank. Thus, it is obvious that the tank mounts and tanks were put in before the decks. What I did is to drill in the wood on either side of the rod and make enough room to twist the bend so that it was parallel. Then I layed the rod down toward the bow enough to slide it up and out toward the stern. It kind of made a mess of the wood in that area, but I can fill it with something once I put it back together.
BTW, the rod that I removed is the one that is inboard and to the rear on both tanks. Once that one was removed the tank could be raised up. I put a piece of 4x4 and then a piece of 2x4 on top of it under the tank. I put a set toward the front of the tank and a set in the rear. Once the wood was under the tank it slid back to the stern as far as it would go and then the rear of the tank slid out toward the center of the boat and the tank came out with a little wiggling here and there.
Hope this helps anyone looking to do this.
I am going to start another thread on repowering and give the details that I have found so far. I do not think rockmeister is very far from me, so we may be able to trade some info and vendors.
Thanks again,
Jerry |
