Well, we finally bought our Carver.
1989 28' Voyager. Needs some TLC, but this is my two year project
to get ready.
Has anyone changed the saloon lay out? We are looking a removing
both the seating areas, make one "U" shaped seating on one side
and maybe a free standing chair on the other.
We are not too worried about sleeping a lot of people, but want
to be as comfortable as posable when spening time on the boat.

Well, we have started, very slowly, but started to fix her up.
Most of the systems work, but the PO made some changes and added
some things I don't like, so they need reworked.
The couch is out, and so is much of the old carpet. Looking into
some of the fake teak products for the flooring, kinda expensive so
we'll see.
I have an 18" Garmin radar that I need to mount. Anyone done this?
My real wish is to build a "light weight" foam cored hard top for
the cockpit, and find some type of radar pole or mast that I could
then mount to the hard top.
This boat will always be trailered, even for a weekend, so the mast
needs to fold down when not being used.
I have found some arches, but I'm not really found of them.
Rock, I have been following your arch build, and I may do the same.
Let me know how to post photos so I can show you where we are.

Kindred spirit! :) I am in the process of "redoing" my 1987 Voyager 28. Like you I started out thinking it would be a 2 year project. But, now that I'm in it up to my elbows I think it will be more like 3-4 years. I haven't started changing the floor plan yet but fully intend to eventually do so. For now I am just refinishing wood, giving her a good "Christian" cleaning from bow to stern and evaluating everything. In progress and near term projects include, but are not limited to; new A/C, new head, new windlass, upgrade electronics, complete reupholstery, replace carpet and, the biggie, REPOWER! Yep, repower. I plan to go with either gas EFI V6's or new Yanmar LH series turbo diesels plus a genny and larger fuel tanks. I will have to revive the bank account for that one. After all of that I plan to start customizing the floor plan. Like I said 3-4 years.
It would probably make sense just to sell it and buy a bigger boat with everything already there. But, the wife and I love this little boat. It is plenty big enough for the two of us to enjoy long leisurely cruises and it's small size allows us to explore waters a lot of my friends in their 34+ boats cannot.
Let's keep each other posted as we progress.

Good luck on your Voyager, and good luck with the diesels.
I work for the local Cat dealer, and tried to get my Cat rep to come up with a couple engines, but times at tough..
Anyway, here's my update (photos to follow). Got all the moldy carpit out, fixed the door(s), fixed the front hatch, removed the pull out couch, ran both engines, removed all batteries, cleaned bilge.
Next ... remove both water tanks and all pumps, start disasmebly of the engines (mainfolds, starter, Alt. in prep for removal. Remove and sell winch (PM me if any one needs a winch) and install a windless.
Found some nice swivel chairs to replace the couch, and all the other seats will need to redone to match (going black / gray).
After all that? ... All lighting, inside and out will be replaced with LED, new flooring, remove all my Garmin network from my Excel and install on the Carver. (still don't know how I will mount the radar.
All in good time, and what a good time to have.

The best thing I have going for me on this whole deal is that my boat is in the water right behind my house. So, I can go from project to project and still use the boat whenever I want to. My holding tank and fresh water tanks are in really good shape so all I did was to re-commission them and replace a couple of hoses. I did, however, just buy a new Raritan Elegance head to replace the manuel PHII that was original on the boat. I also found very good used A/C and windlass which I will install in the next couple of weeks.
I've looked at floor plan modifications but I am having trouble on finding ways to improve the layout and still maintain the available storage space. We do a good bit of multi-day and week cruises so storage is very important. I'd be very interested in seeing what you have in mind to do. We use the pull out sofa for napping and sleeping but have yet to eat a meal at the dinnette. We much prefer the table up on the fly bridge. (Which by the way I replaced the original with one a bit larger. Oh yeah, I did replace that bench helm seat with a Tracy International ladder back chair. It gives me a lot more free floor space and is WAY more comfortable for long cruises.
As for engines, I have all but decided on Yanmar LH series Turbo 4's. They are available in 240 HP. Since my gassers are only 230 HP I should get very good performance, i.e. less weight, more HP. I'm still doing the performance math on it but it just looks like the best way to go. Plus, I "MAY" be able to use existing tranny's and V's. They'll need to be rebuilt but that will be way cheaper than buying new ones. I'll keep you posted.
Hey Paul, I have an idea. Let's start a "28 FT Club" and start having an "Annual Cruise In". I used to fly and would go to annual "Fly IN's" and I used to ride Harleys and used to go to all sorts of ralleys. Why not one for 28 footers? I would assume most of your members are at some point on the East Coast so anyplace we could all cruise to might be a hell of a lot of fun.

When I removed the pull out, I left the bottom set of drawers, and we still had room for a couple chairs on top. It was not quite enought room to stand up however, so I removed them as well.
We have been using a 26' (8'6" wide) for years and have spent as much as a week on Lake Powell, so the storage space, even after the pull-out removal is twice what we have now, so we are happy.
Without the chairs, we could dance in there!

Were you able to get all of that out in good enough condition to put back if you wanted to? Or was it al screwed and glued and had to be ripped/knocked out? I would like to take all of mine out and replace all of the carpet with Teak or Bamboo parquet but I am afraid I would damage everything too much removing it.

Everything came our in good shape with everything screwed togther
(Carver must have stock in a screw company)
The only part what was glued and needed to come out was the parquet flooring. Personally I hate the stuff anyway.
I will be pulling the stuff off under the sette as well.
(anyone what a bag of parquet strips?)
There are some screws under the parquet flooring that need to be removed to get the ply out.
I may put the bottom half back in, not sure yet.
