First of all I want to thank everyone for the help I received so far on this site. This is a GREAT site for Carver owners. I have read through allot of topics on this site that have been a great help to me in my renovation of my 1982 Carver 2896. We are hoping to launch in the next three weeks as I have a hot buyer for my Chris Craft and don't want to lose him.

My question today is, what kind of trim do I need to hold the window into the door on the bulkhead? When I bought the boat, all that was holding it in was a butt load of silicone, looked like CRAP. I have used silicone, sparingly, to hold it in so far but don't trust it for the long run.

There is about a 1/8 groove all around the window frame to accommodate some sort of trim but I need to know what kind and where to get it.

Thanks again.
Mark

If your door is teak, it may use the same black rubber/plastic molding that retains the windows on my '74 and '78. Someone more knowledgeable on the forum may know for certain if it is the same stuff.

In any case I have a big pile of that molding and could send you some.

I also have a question about the use of silicone to secure the windows. Even with the proper molding in the groove there was still silicone holding the windows in the frame on both of my Carvers and it looked like crap.

A couple weeks ago I removed all the windows. I intend to remount them and have been seriously considering using "Solar Seal #900" caulk or possibly a butyl caulk if I can find it in brown. If I am not pleased with the bond between the new caulk and the teak I may have to use 100% silicone again, but will use a brown or black color.

I would be very interested in some of your extra molding. I finished installing the bulk head today, looks good, but need the molding to have it complete. I used 100% silicone, clear, with good results. I put down a 1/8" bead and had no mess or oozing. The guy who did it before me used about a 1/2 ", looked like crap and was a mess but it held very strong. I broke two of the windows just trying to remove them from the frame with a razor blade, pretty expensive mistake.
Anyway the bulkhead is in and now it is time for the new swim platform and strip the bottom for new paint, drain the tanks, wash wax and then hopefully we can go fishing. Ill send you a private message with my address for the molding.
