I spent the weekend puttering away at temperature gauges that were giving crazy readings and eventually tracked down the problems (and solutions).
FYI here are a few of things I learned along the way:
1. Some senders are made for dual stations and some are for single stations.
2. The sending unit must be compatable with the gauge - in my case both gauges as I have upper and lower stations. Even the so-called universal senders are not compatable with some gauges.
3. If you have a dual station set-up both gauges should be identical.
4. Placing a lock washer below the connecting terminal instead of above it can create a poor connection. In my case this created a gauge that worked intermintantly.
All of the above is absolutely correct. (Don't ask me how I know that)
PLUS, some engines have 2, not one, temp sender on it. Some of the GM based Mercruisers, not all, have 2 senders; one on the top near the thermostat and one on the front of the engine in the water pump housing. Cganging the one on top may or may not solve the problem.
