Looking for a good windlass. Even a manual will do.

Recommend watching eBay. I see some really good deals there quite often. I have a Lewmar 600 that works really well.

Depends, though, on how deep you will be anchoring. 99% of mine is in water less that 30' so the smaller 600 works fine. If you're goiung to be out in deeper water with a much longer pull you might want to go with a 900.

I have an original equipment rope-only windlass manufactured by Good. It functions, has all the parts, but pays the rope in/out slower than it should. I was going to try and fix it but ended up replacing it with a Lewmar with chain capabilities.

It's the 500 Rope Series CFD model halfway down the page:

Lemme know if it's something you might be interestd in.

Thanks guys, still looking though. I've missed a couple of deals on e-bay and craigslist. I have to have something that I can use with my 30ft of 5/16 chain. I do anchor in shallow water though, so a 600 might do it for me. Meanwhile, the wife is building up some muscle.

I'll have to look at my owners book to see but I'm not sure what size chain the 600 will handle. I have 30' of 1/4" chain which works. I'm not sure, though about chain larger than that.

Bob

PS: OK, I looked and the book specifically says 1/2" three strand rope and 1/4" chain. So with larger chain you will need a windlass with a larger gypsie. But, it may be cheaper just to buy smaller chain. Larger windlasses get really pricey.

I have the original 12 Volt winch. This really nothing more than a
motor, gears and a drum.

You have your .... ah first mate, rap the rode around the drum a couple times and stand on the foot switch.
You still need to pull the rode in, but this thing takes all the load.
Sorry, I don't have a photo, but would be willing to sent it to you for a couple hundred ?????. Don't really know how much they cost.
I will be installing a full windlass with free fall. That way my wench can stay in the cockpit where she belongs :-).

I think I have it on the "used" forum as well.

On my previous boat I had a free fall windlass. Never again. As the rope came out of the locker too fast and was constantly getting twisted and jamming up which would have to be manually freed up.

The one I have now is power down. True it is slower than free fall. But, when a twist occurs all I have to do is back it up a bit and it clears itself. I don't have to go down to the rope locker and free it by hand.

Just a thought.

Good point, I have a power down on my Excel and Love it.
It's the ONLY item I need to spend money on, that wife has NO problem paying for. :-)

LOL, yep, that and the automatic flush electric head I installed in the Spring. She has had NO complaints about that!
